Maine Cabin Masters (2017–…): Season 8, Episode 3 - Give a Dog a Camp - full transcript

A man recently succeed his dad's winter retreat and wants to honor his father's memory by making the camp comfortable for his family and space for their dogs.

My father, he always
wanted to put a porch
on the front of the camp.

They're just looking
to make it more comfortable
for them and their dogs.

It's gonna be
an 8x24 addition.

Showed up, and it's definitely
too windy to try
and put roofing panels on.

The Hollands
have a lot of corgis.

So thought we'd built
a set of doggy bunk beds
to double up on space.

I have some test
dogs here with me today.

Frankie, over here. Up here.
Okay. Come in here.

Oh, oh, oh! Look at that.

That's what my father wanted.

Those are big tracks.

There's some
big deer out here, I guess.

Here we are.
He told us
to meet him at the path...

- Where the deer tracks cross--
- Where is he?

Chase!

Chase!

I hear something.

That thing is cool.

That thing is cool.

What is that?

Watch out.
He's gonna run us...

Cool.

Climb on in.

What is this thing?

This is an antique
trail groomer.

All right. And we're off.

Today, we are
in Fayette, Maine, meeting
the Holland family.

Andy and Terry Holland
recently inherited this
camp from Andy's father.

Yeah.

It was kind of Andy's
father's getaway retreat
in the wintertime.

It was kind of Andy's
father's getaway retreat
in the wintertime.

He was heavily into
the snowmobile club,

so I figured it was
good arrival
in an old trail maintainer.

How does it turn?
Ooh, baby. Ah!

Oh.

Whoo-hoo-hoo!

- Andy and Terry are looking
to fix up the camp.
- Whoa!

Just looking
to make it more comfortable
for them and their dogs.

They foster corgis.

- Oh, nice. I'm in.
- So...

- Ashley's sold.
- I'm sold.

Furry friends.
That's all I need to hear.

Is that it?

That's it.
It's a nice big field.

That's it.
It's a nice big field.

Here they come.

Who's that coming?
Is that Chase?

We're the Holland family.
My name is Andy Holland.

This is my wife Terry Holland.

And this is my son,
Jonathan Holland.

- Welcome!
- Welcome!

- Hi, guys. How's it going?
- Look at all the doggies.

Hi, doggies.

Hi, everybody.

I mean, that was the best
arrival I've ever had.

We pull up
and there's six dogs.

I mean, come on.
You guys know me.

The corgis that we have,
all have been rescues
except for Tucker.

The corgis that we have,
all have been rescues
except for Tucker.

They love it up here.

Actually, they're not
used to being on leash.

When we come up here,
they're used to having
the run of the place.

- Oh, wow.
- Oh, wow.

- Oh, yeah, they do, so--
- Oh, yeah.

They'll run the fields,
you know?

All right, so tell us
about the cabin.

- All right.
- All right.

The cabin was
originally built in 1972

by my father
and my grandfather.

It hasn't had anything
really done to it other
than the outside,

the exterior, to maintain it.

He always wanted
to put a porch
on the front of the camp.

As you can see,
the front door is screened in
- Yeah.

Nobody has ever
walked through that door.

But you can see there's
a door on the opposite
side of the cabin.

But you can see there's
a door on the opposite
side of the cabin.

So what we're looking to
do is get a four season
porch on the front.

So are you looking
to use this year round
more than just wintertime?

So it would be
a year round thing.

What we'd like to do
is get more light into
the main portion of the cabin.

It's very dark in there.
- Yeah.

And then to
update the interior.

And is it two bedrooms?

Currently, right now,
it's two bedrooms.

- Two very small bedrooms.
- Yeah.

Both bedrooms had bunk
beds in them 'cause the dogs

actually sleep on
the bottom bunk.

- I sleep on the top bunk.
- It's all about the dogs.

What we'd like to do is,
like, make two bedrooms

if we can,
into a one larger room.
- Sure.

It's there a loft up
there or something.

You'll see that there's
a enclosed off area.

It's a loft.
I don't know what's in there.

This has been...
you'll see it as sealed off.

It's got a plastic
wrap over the door,

and that is to keep
the cold air from
coming out of the attic.

What we'd like to do
is take that second bedroom

and bring it up to the loft.

Some of the shortcomings
of this camp

that I would love to see
improved is the bathroom.

When you take your shower,
you're standing
in a washtub sink.

When you take your shower,
you're standing
in a washtub sink.

It's a man cave.
I will say
when you go in and look at it.

My father came up here
every winter to work
on the trail system

for the local snowmobile club.

The bathroom is
a guy's bathroom.

Let's just say.
It currently has a woodstove.

- I see it's going right now.
- Yeah, yeah. Yeah.

We have a wood going
right now in the living room.

We could get rid of it if
we need to, you know,

get some real estate
out of that area...
- Get more space.

'Cause it does
take up a lot of space.

How about the exterior?
I see the exterior is dark.

It looks like it
was recently painted.

Yeah, the dark.
I'd like to keep it...

Yeah, the dark.
I'd like to keep it...

Anything in the camp
that's special to you

that you wouldn't want us
to change or that you
would want us to save?

Cabinets, my grandfather
did make them.

Okay. So...

Like to keep
the handpump well.

- There's a handpump.
- Yeah.

That, originally,
handpump was from the day
that the camp was built.

When are you looking
to have the camp back?

Twelve weeks or so.

And so what do you have
to put into the project?

Right now,
we're looking at $40,000.

- Okay.
- All right.

So, you know, you're looking
to put a four season porch
on the front of the camp,

So, you know, you're looking
to put a four season porch
on the front of the camp,

let more light into the camp,
just update it,

enlarge the bathroom,
go from two bedrooms into
one good sized room

with a little privacy area
for some, you know,
overflow, sleeping.

Something
comfortable for the dogs.

- Yeah.
- And 12 weeks, $40,000.

- We just need the keys.
- All right.

- Here you go.
- Okay.

- All right.
- Thank you.

- Fantastic.
- Get it done.

Thank you.
Thank you.

- Bye.
- Thank you.

Come on.

- Come on, let's go.
- Come on, guys.

I think that this project is
gonna be huge for my dad

because of everything
that this camp means
for his family.

Because of everything
that this camp means
for his family.

This takes a huge
burden off of, you know,

me getting it done,
because, you know,
I'm not an expertise builder.

You know, these are the guys
that are here to do it
and do it right

and do it from the memory
of my father.

This is the never
used screen door?

This is where your screening
porch is going to be.

How far are we
going to come out?

Eight feet out,
four season porch.

- Yeah.
- Yeah.

There's no foundation work.

There's not much
exterior work to start with.

Since the woodstove is
connected to the old chimney,
we can remove that as well.

Since the woodstove is
connected to the old chimney,
we can remove that as well.

I think we'll work off
Techno Metal Post,

get those set in the ground
and we can start
building right away.

That's awesome.

On the exterior
of the Holland camp,

we're going to add
an 8x24 four-season porch

and try and open up
the space in between
to let more light in,

just give more space,
and remove the old chimney.

Cool!

- Oh!
- Look at this place.

- Dark.
- Very dark.

- Wicked dark.
- Wow.

- Wicked dark.
- Wow.

I do think I came
to Grandma's house,

the fake brick,
the old paneling.

Wow. Look at those.

- Those are awesome.
- Cool beams.

You know, you've
got this open area.

It's a little claustrophobic,
though.

It's a lot
of claustrophobic.

You push this loft space back.
We do demo.

We'll get up in there.
See what's really
going on up there.

Two tiny bedrooms.

Is that shower for the dogs?

Look at it.

No, that was for them.

This is exactly
the type of shower
I want for my dogs.

- This is a tiny bathroom.
- Wow.

There's a lot
of stuff in here.
- Yeah.

You can't see
the field at all.

Think about
all the wild animals
that are down there.

And for an opening,
I can picture now a big porch
the whole way, right?

- Yeah.
- That'll be nice.

Open up.
You can see everything.

See your little
corgis running off.

Yeah. You can...
they can actually keep their
eye on the corgis.

On the inside of the camp,

we are going to open up
the attic space,

make it into a little bit more
loft space.

We're going to enlarge
the two small bedrooms
into one bedroom,

We're going to enlarge
the two small bedrooms
into one bedroom,

enlarge the bathroom area,
and open up the space

into the new 8x24 addition
on the front of the camp.

I think we need
to call the family,

get them to come
and get the stuff out.

You call the family.
We'll call the guys.

We don't have to touch
the roof or the foundation.

Or much of the exterior.

Or much of the exterior.

It's demo day at
the Holland camp,

and the goal is to get
the inside completely
emptied out

and get the place opened up.

It's going to be
an 8x24 four-season porch
off the front of it.

It's going to be
an 8x24 four-season porch
off the front of it.

Fairly new roof,
painted last year.

Really the inside is just...

you know, definitely
needs to be cleaned out.

Let's go see it.

It's going to be nice and warm
with all these bodies in here.

I'm sweating.

Ah, they got a bunch
of stuff out of here.

They got a lot out.

The goal is to keep
the bedrooms on that end.

And once we get
the porch framed out,

we'll see how much of
this wall we can open up.

Woodstove is going away.

They're gonna replace it with
a, you know, propane monitor.

They're gonna replace it with
a, you know, propane monitor.

So that saves a lot of space.

We'll get this opened up,
see what's going
on up in there,

and maybe go back a little bit
with it that way just to,

you know, make it not feel
quite so confined in here.

There's a few
things worth saving.

The water pump.

And we're keeping
the upper cabinets.

Everything else is coming out.

The place is tiny. It's 16x24.

So with all of us here today,
we should be
able to get this place

stripped right
back to the frame.

Do think Ashley can do
something with these things.

Oh, yeah.

Oh, yeah.

All right,
I'll take the bathroom.

Look at that.
Give her a push, Josh.

Easy demo.

The place was homeowner
built, which can always
be a wild cat.

Right now, it's just stripping
everything back to see

what we're working
with behind these walls.

Ahh!

Why do I do stupid things?

Ahh!

It wasn't that bad.

We're back
at the Holland camp today.

The plan is to do
exploratory demo.

So we're stripping
the place back.

I'm just gonna leave the pump
attached right to the sink.

It's a good stainless base.

So I'll take this,
set it aside,

and we'll see
how we can reuse it.

We're leaving
the upper cabinets for now.

It's got good solid
pine behind them.

It's week two.

Cam and Connor are coming
today from Techno Metal Post.

So we're excited to see them,
get them going.

As soon as
the footings are up,
we can start the addition.

It should be
a pretty easy day,
which is an 8x24 addition,

so one carrying beam across.

- Perfect.
- How many posts
in that length?

We'll probably do
four posts for that.

- Four posts?
- Yeah, it should be plenty.

Okay.

Perfect.

Chase, you getting
the time capsule?
- Yeah.

Hasn't been opened
in, what, quite some time?

That's what he says.

So excited to
see in that loft.

I don't know what
would be up there.

I don't know what
would be up there.

One of those days
we forgot our ladders.

There you go.

Andy told us that this hasn't
been opened in, like, decades.

- Oh, big score.
- What is it?

Oh, cool.

- Popcorn, popcorn.
- Nice.

We had one of those popcorn.

Calling Ash
and I'm telling Ash
to bring popcorn.

Lo and behold,
it's a popcorn machine.

But, hey, who doesn't
love an air popper?

- What else is up there?
- That's it up here.

- What else is up there?
- That's it up here.

I can sit up in it.
So enough to squeeze a bed in.

Sweet.
- Good score, guys.
Now I'm hungry.

- Hi.
- Hi, honey.

- Whoa.
- Hi, Charlie.

You guys
are busy this morning.

So Ryan called me and said,
"Hey, can you bring me
out some popcorn?"

So sure.

Gives me an opportunity
to check out the place.

I get out here
and demo's pretty much done,
so I played that one well.

You got the popcorn memo?

Why in the world do
I need to bring popcorn?

Why in the world do
I need to bring popcorn?

We scored a popcorn popper.

You really just want
a popcorn snack?

Yeah.

Also, they didn't ask me
for butter or salt.

I believe they're just
going to have air
popped plain popcorn.

It's not a thing.

Well, you guys pretty
much have done it all.

I'm actually gonna get out
of here before they try to
get me to eat any of it.

Well, here's your popcorn.
Bye, guys.

What's all this junk?

Ry, is this stuff that
you just saved for me?

Ry, is this stuff that
you just saved for me?

I saved you those.
Those are cool.

Yeah. I think
Andy's dad Marshall made 'em.

I'm glad you saved these.

They just need to be
cleaned up a little
and put them back in the camp.

Maybe we can electrify them.

That would be cool,
wouldn't it?

Who do I talk to?
An electrician?

- Not me.
- I know.

- That's a good idea.
- I bet your brother can do it.

That would be cool idea,
like have 'em hang.

- I bet you can find
someone to help you.
- Yeah.

I like it a lot.

I'm going to take
him home with me

and go find
an electrician friend
and see if that can be done.

I kind of like this
moose too, though.

- All right.
Yeah, you can keep that.
- You don't like him?

-Perfect.
- See ya.

Popcorn time.

- Ooh, get ready, Dylan.
- Here it comes.

- Oh! First one.
- Sounds like it's plugged.

- Something's going on.
- She clogged up.

- What melted?
- The whole thing.

Oh, we ruined it.

That thing is plugged solid.

Did we do something wrong?

Yeah, we plugged it in
and tried to use it.

Yeah, our popcorn
experiment, well,

it was fun while it lasted,
all five seconds.

Nice work today.
This place is emptied out.

It's already bigger.
It's already lighter.

Techno Posts are in.
Place is demoed.

Ready to rock and roll.

The next step is to
start building the porch
on the front of the camp.

And once the addition's built,
then we can focus
more on the interior

And once the addition's built,
then we can focus
more on the interior

and framing up
and opening up
in between the two.

- Let's go catch a matinee.
- Anyone want this?
I'm out of here.

It's week three
at the Holland camp,
and today,

the guys are working on
framing up the front platform
for the new addition.

It's going to be
a 8x24 addition.

They're dropping in
the insulation before
they deck it over

They're dropping in
the insulation before
they deck it over

because it is gonna
be four seasons.

While the guys are framing up,

I was trying to figure out
layout for the new setup
for the Holland camp.

They wanted a larger bedroom,
single bedroom,

larger bathroom,
and some closet space.

They had two bedrooms before.
They are pretty small.

It's not a huge space,
so just trying to maximize
what we're working with.

It's not a huge space,
so just trying to maximize
what we're working with.

So I'm just using some boards,
trying to lay it out,

seeing how it's all
gonna work together.

This wall pretty much
comes across where it was...

Where it was.

We decided to put
a closet in the new bathroom

which runs along
the front wall.

This allows us to maximize
the space for the expanded
bathroom and bedroom.

It also allows keep
the existing window in place

and gives ventilation
for the new bathroom.

It's week four
at the Holland camp

and our goal is to get
the walls framed up.

If the weather cooperates,
framing should go quickly

and then we can get
the exterior sheathed.

Next, the guys are
gonna open the existing
roof to figure out

how we're gonna marry the new
addition to the existing roof.

So the guys are working
today at the Holland camp,

and they are opening up
the space into the new porch.

The door was right here.

So took it right
back to there.

There's a window on that side.

Took it right
back to over there.

Put a temporary wall
in to support everything,

and then there'll be a 4x8
beam to carry the weight here,

and then they can get that
beam in, support everything,

and then they can get that
beam in, support everything,

and start framing up
the interior walls.

It's pretty windy today,
so they're going
to hold off

on continuing with the roof.

But there's plenty to do
inside to keep it going.

Hopefully, weather cooperates,
but we're still in winter.

- Snow is always
around the corner.
- Yeah.

So the guys are working
today at Holland camp.

It's a beautiful day
and the guys are working today
to get a rafter idea,

you know, what the pitch
of the roof is gonna be

and hopefully getting
the roof sheathed over today.

And then we can
start installing windows.

Looking great.

After that, we'll get
the exterior of the new porch
sheathed and flashed.

Looks awesome.

Next, we're gonna remove
a few ceiling beams to open up

the main room
and install insulation.

We're at
the Holland camp today.

The plan is to
put on the roof,

but we showed up
and it's definitely
too windy to try

and put roofing panels on.

Oh, it's gonna be too windy.

Oh, it's gonna be too windy.

We have 12 weeks to get
this project complete
for the Hollands,

so hopefully,
make the timeline.

But we still got quite
a few weeks of winter.

See how it goes.

Wild, wild wind.

We're at the Holland camp
today to put on the roof,

but we showed up,
and it's definitely
too windy to try

and put roofing panels on.

So we're shifting gears.

The plan today is to
tear down the chimney

and putting up pine
on the interior walls.

We're gonna try
and leave three or four blocks
at the bottom

and replace it with
a chimney pipe.

And replace it with
a chimney pipe.

Since we're replacing
the woodstove
with a propane monitor,

you don't need access to
the chimney in the main room,

but there is a second wood
stove down in the basement.

So we'll replace the chimney
with a smaller pipe
for that woodstove.

It's pretty old, cracked.

So I don't think it will
take much to pull it down.

One, two, three.

Yeah.

Bingo.

- Sweet.
- Yeah!

Okay, pack it up.

On the interior of
the Holland camp,

we've got
the new bathroom framed in,

we've got
the new bathroom framed in,

new bedroom framed in,
got a closet, shower,

room for a composting toilet,
and a small vanity.

We've enlarged
the bedroom with two windows,

get more light
into to that space,

and we also peeled back
the loft a little bit,

open it up to make it
part of the living area,

and also opened up the space
in between the main cabin
and the new sunroom.

We've got windows
all across it,
let more light in,

and also take
advantage of this view
out across the field.

We're shifting
to the interior.

We're shifting
to the interior.

We've got a load of
V match pine,

so we're gonna start
closing in the walls.

It's light, it's shiny.

It will bring a lot of
light into the camp.

Hi.

Whoa. Cool. This is nice.

Gussy, look how
bright it is in here.

Gussy, look how
bright it is in here.

Look how bright it is.

It makes such a difference,
opening up that wall
and adding all those windows.

It gives them just
that much more space.

They have a lot of
dogs to fit in this camp.

And I know that I wanted to
make something for the dogs.

Chase, what do you think
about doggie bunk beds?
- Yeah.

You make the structure,
I'll get the cushions
and everything for them

- and decorate them pretty.
- Yeah.

Hey, where should
the dog beds go?

Gus, Charlie,
where should the dog beds go?

I brought in my experts today,
Gus and Charlie.

Why not ask them where they'd
like the bunk beds to go?

Why not ask them where they'd
like the bunk beds to go?

Show me.

Oh, you want one right
there so you can look
out the window?

That's a good idea.
You guys are so smart.

Gus definitely knew where
he wanted them to go,

right out on that porch
so he can stare out, you know,

look out over the fields,
check out all the wildlife,
sun himself.

You know, whatever dogs do.

Looks like you got the layout
all figured out.

Good job.
Let's go check outside.

Good morning.
It looks awesome in here.

Good morning.
It looks awesome in here.

What a difference.

My first time back
to the Holland camp
in a while and BT, Justin,

the Dakotas have
done a great job.

Gets warm in here quick,
I bet, huh?

There were so
many people inside,

so I was gonna fill in pieces
where the old chimney was.

So once I patch this in
and get this side to go,

it's really going to
clean up everything.

Oh, that's a piece.

Oh, I might be able to use
that with the back on it
too and get everything.

Then we can work on
our flashing
and tie everything together.

Let's see if we can get our
walls finished before Ryan.

The all-important love tap.
Come on, baby.

The all-important love tap.
Come on, baby.

Beautiful.

I just got a little bit
to do left, Chase.

Just a little bit.

This should be
the final three.

Look at that.

This one is taking me a while,
but I think I nailed it.

Looks good. What a difference.

Even though
we couldn't get the roof on,

Even though
we couldn't get the roof on,

something for you guys
to do tomorrow.

Next step is,
once the wind dies down,

get the roof on,
get the exterior stained,

and continue closing in walls,
then ceilings and floors.

All right,
let's get out of here.

- Hey, what else can I do?
- That's it. We're done.

I nailed it today.

They did sheath
the whole inside,

but I got that
one gable end looking mint.

So, hey, it's not always
a quantity of work
but what you get done.

So it's roofing day
at the Holland camp.

It's a beautiful day.
The wind has died down.

So goal today is
to get the roof on,

get this place watertight
as soon as possible.

So the roof itself is
pretty straightforward.

It's 18-foot panels,
screw down.

It's a very slow,
very low pitch.

It's a very slow,
very low pitch.

So it should be
easily walkable.

So hopefully
by the end of today,
this will all be flashed,

covered, and watertight.

Superman!

It's week eight at
the Holland camp.

The guys have been cranking.

They've sheathed
the ceiling...

They've sheathed
the ceiling...

Put in the flooring...

and had a heater installed.

And today, we are finishing
off interior trim

and getting
a composting toilet inset.

Before, they had
a small chemical toilet.

They wanted something
a little nicer,
a little bigger.

I've got a lot of trim to do
and a short time to do it.

Chase says it can't be done.
But we're gonna get it done.

It's one of those instances,
you just throw the eastern
white pine at it.

This is the exterior side
of the original cabin.

We put a beam
and opened it up.

It looks great.
Now, I'm just trying to
clean it up, you know,

where everything
comes together.

Everything's
a little out of plane.

We have rough cut.
We have milled lumber.

We have profiled lumber.

Normally, we would just
go a flat boat across around.

But really, this is cheaper.

A board like 1x10
is pretty expensive.

This is all just scraps.

This is all just scraps.

Gotta be beautiful.

You know, we're getting close
to the end of the project.

We're close to our budget.

So we're gonna build
some Z back doors.

But I brought a few that I had
salvaged from another project.

They were a little bit
narrower than we needed,
so had three of them.

We kind of cannibalized
one of them.

It was all screwed together,

so I was able to extend
the size of the doors
to make them work.

So I was able to extend
the size of the doors
to make them work.

And we only needed two doors.

One was a slider
for the bathroom.

One was a regular door
for the bedroom.

So, you know,
we used what we had
and save some material.

Marvelous.

- What's up?
- The place looks awesome, huh?

- Looks so awesome.
- Doesn't it?

I chose a darker color
for the floors

'cause there was a lot of,
like, the natural pine.

So I wanted just a little bit
of contrast to the walls.

And I love it 'cause it
kind of ties in this wall,
outside with the inside.

And I love it 'cause it
kind of ties in this wall,
outside with the inside.

I think it looks great.

Will you hold
that end, please?

It's a very decorative trim
work you got going on here.

Hold me on the end.

- Up top.
- What is happening?

I'm just to trying to
look at something.

- Something around the top.
- What is happening here?

- What are you actually doing?
- Line me up with the...
Line me up with the end.

Butt to butt.

I don't know if this
is going to work.

- Yeah?
- Yeah, it doesn't--
Not that...

You'll see what I'm doing.

Some reason, doing any
project with your wife,

it can be a little...
I never do...

You never do it the right way.

- You are getting fancy.
- Don't say that too loud.

- You are getting fancy.
- Don't say that too loud.

Probably get in
trouble for doing this.

- Getting really fancy. Fancy!
- Don't say that too loud.

I need a piece 3 inches wide,
27 inches long.

Three inches wide,
twenty-seven inches long.

- I got my own projects to do.
- I don't really need it.

Keep me free for five minutes.

Dude, you're the best.

My little archway
masterpiece is done.

My little archway looks like
it should be in ancient Rome.

Just beautiful, triumphant.

Trim here. Trim there.
Glorious.

Trim here. Trim there.
Glorious.

It isn't easy hiding
here from my wife

and making it look
nice at the same time.

The Hollands
have a lot of corgis.

It's not a huge camp.

So thought we'd build
a set of doggy bunk beds
to double up on space.

We're wrapping everything
up today, finishing trim
and everything.

So we're using what we have.

We're not buying
any more stuff.

There's a little bit
of 2x4 left over.

There's some old siding
from the loft available.

So, you know, I was able
to use a little different
material than normal.

So, you know, I was able
to use a little different
material than normal.

They're small dogs, so they
don't need to be that big.

I figured 24x34, two levels,

and the top one will need
some sort of ramp up to it.

Hi.

Is this the famous
doggie bunk bed?

I guess so.

I like it.
All right, so ramp.

Now, how do you know
the proper corgi angle?

I don't.

Well, I have some test
dogs there with me today.

Frankie, over here.
Come on.

So it's week eight
at the Holland camp.

I have my special projects
that I need
to finish up today.

I need to work
on the doggy bunk beds
with my brother.

So I brought my friend Frankie
with me today.

She's a little bit
smaller than the corgis.

We needed to figure out
the proper angle
for a corgi ramp.

Excuse me, Frankie. Frankie.

Look what I have.
Frankie, come here.

Come on. No, right here.

Come on. No, right here.

Up here. Okay, come here.

Walk up the stairs. Come on.
Come on, up here.

I think that's too steep.

- Too steep?
- Yeah.

Is that too steep for you?
Okay.

Let's see if she'll
come on it if it's like this.

This is what you need. Look.

There you go. Get in there.
There you go. Perfect.

You like it?

Our ramp that we made
was too steep for Frankie,

but I know that the Hollands
have some special stairs
for their corgis,

which I know will work great
with the bunk beds.

Which I know will work great
with the bunk beds.

You guys just get the base,
set that sink in there,

I can come in and mess
with the hand pump
and all that stuff.

So one of the goals today
was to get the sink installed.

So we'll get some base
cabinets set in place

and then we can
reinstall the sink.

Once I pulled all
the measurements,

by the time you put
the stove, the sink,

there's a little
bit of extra room.

So we'll have a piece of
butcher block set in place,

and that hopefully,
that should get us
where we need to be.

I have my lantern
special projects that
I need to finish up today.

So I got Ryan to help me out.

Pretty much,
I want to just take them

and change them from
candlelight fixtures to
electric light fixtures.

Andy's father made these,
so I really wanted to bring
them back into the camp.

I didn't want the fire hazard,

so I really just want
to take out the hazard
and make them functional.

First things first,
I think is we just need
to take them apart.

All right.

We drilled the hole
in the base

so that we could insert
the electrical fixture.

So that we could insert
the electrical fixture.

Then we cut the rope
to length.

Down through here.

Once we threaded it through,
it's unacceptable.

I got... look, just relax.

This guy making these
had a lot of patience.

I bet he didn't make
them with his wife.

And there we had it,
put it right back together.

I love it.

- So now you want to wire it up
and I'll work on the next one?
- Sure.

One of those little arts
and crafts projects.

And my hands aren't
made for little
tiny screwdrivers and knives.

And my hands aren't
made for little
tiny screwdrivers and knives.

And look, I already
cut myself.
I'm built for demo.

It was a great way
to freshen them up

and reincorporate
them back into the camp.

All right, cool.

In the last week,
the guys have installed
the chimney pipe

and my team is coming
to get this place ready
for the Hollands.

and my team is coming
to get this place ready
for the Hollands.

The camp has
just been repainted,

so we just painted
the addition a nice
brown to match.

Chase built some
doggy bunk beds.

I went and found some
cute little mattresses

and dog toys to
decorate those with.

We also hung up the lights
that we had custom fit
into electric lights.

We also hung up the lights
that we had custom fit
into electric lights.

Everything's decorated
and it's looking great.

All right, Chase.

Think that's
everything in here.

Oh, we got to turn
these lights on.

- Did you see them yet?
- One, two, three.

Oh!

- Perfect.
- Looks good. Let's do this.

They are gonna freak out.

We had 12 weeks and $40,000
to add an addition
to the front

We had 12 weeks and $40,000
to add an addition
to the front

and overall
update the interior.

We were able to get
everything that the Hollands
were looking for.

Do you know
how they're arriving today?

- Can't ride snowmobiles.
- Maybe a dog sled.

Let's go find out.

Oh, oh, oh, oh!
Look at that!

Wow!

Oh, oh, oh, oh!
Look at that!

That's crazy.

- Yes!
- Look at that.

Where's the cabin?

- Right?
- That's awesome.

That looks splendid.

- Hi, guys.
- Hey.

Wow. This is fantastic.

Unbelievable.

As we were driving up
and I saw it,

it had the front porch put on,
that's what my father wanted.

This is beyond.

This is beyond.

- Nice ride.
- Thank you.

- Thanks.
- Thanks.

That was actually my dad's.
My father built the camp.

When he finished this camp,
he started restoring the car
and bringing it back to life.

He and I worked on the car,
you know, night after night,

weekend after weekend,
for years.

So it was only appropriate
to bring it up here
to introduce the cabin

and the model A together.

This is my girlfriend Sarah.
You guys didn't meet her.

- Okay.
- Hi.

- Hi, Sarah.
- It's nice to meet you.

-Nice meeting you as well.
- Nice to meet you as well.

When we first got in,
there was still plenty
of snow on the ground,

so we wanted to get
started right away.

We got Techno Metal Posts
in here.

They set the post,
and we were able to build that
addition right off the front.

Got it framed up,
got a metal roof,
and new windows.

We went with a board
and batten siding.

Ashley picked out the brown
to kind of match
the existing brown.

- Look good.
- It looks really nice.

Chimney looks a lot
nicer than it used to.

The chimney
is a big improvement.

- Yeah.
- Yeah.

The old chimney
came down very easily.

The old chimney
came down very easily.

- Yeah.
- A huff and a puff.

- Yeah.
- Yeah.

But the majority of the work
is done on the inside,
so let's head on in.

- We're really excited.
- Thank you.

- Come on, let's go
check it out.
- After you.

Oh!

- What a difference.
- Are we in the same cabin?

-
They used the lanterns.
- Great job.

It was a man cave.
Very dark, old.

It needed help.
We definitely got it.

It needed help.
We definitely got it.

Andy, your cabinets
are still there behind you.

Oh. Yeah.
My grandfather made these...

And we have
bottom cabinets now.

-
...one time he came up.
- Lovely.

- Lovely.
- Yeah.

You noticed
we change the candles.

Yes. I like that.

That's awesome.
- Nice.
'Cause his dad made those.

- Exactly.
- Yeah.

This is so awesome.

The ceiling space pretty
much came to here.

- Yeah.
- Yeah.

- Yeah.
- Yeah.

-So we cut out two or three
of the floor joists...
- Yeah.

... and opened that right up
inside the ceiling,

closed in the ceiling
with painted white pine.

Oh, I like the heating.

- Unbelievable.
- Yeah.

A new propane monitor.

- Gives it more space.
- Yeah.

This is unbelievably awesome.

We kept the top cabinets.
- Yeah.

Kept your sink top,
new base cabinets.

Oh, look at this.

And this is the handpump?
- Give it a whirl.

- Oh, does it work now?
- It does.

Oh! Yes.

The hand pump uses
the same water line.

The hand pump uses
the same water line.

All the renovations,
it's just beautiful.

But the elements that have
been kept still makes it
feel like the cabin,

even though it's totally
renovated and new.

Yeah.
Oh, look at the doggie beds.

- I love it.
- Oh, they're spoiled.

Oh, let's go
get the dogs.

I have stairs
that can go right to them.
Oh, good.

Ramp did not work.
So I'm glad you have stairs.

Yes.
We tested it out with my dogs.

They're nice.
They're elevated beds,

and then there's bunks
underneath for the dogs.

And then there's bunks
underneath for the dogs.

And they will love it
because they will have
window viewing of the field

and be able to bark
at the bears, and the turkeys,
and the deer.

For them,
it's gonna be really nice.

You got a new side
entrance there with a set of
stairs out towards the field.

Yeah, excellent.

Well, there's more
to see you guys.
- Okay.

Check out the loft
and the bedroom.

Oh, wow.
This is awesome.

Never thought
I'd be up here before.

- This is so cool.
- Head on into the bedrooms.

- This is so cool.
- Head on into the bedrooms.

- Yeah.
- Check them out.

We actually have
a full-sized bedroom.

Oh, my gosh. This is so nice.

Just the way
it's been laid out.

You know, we actually have
a bedroom that can fit
a queen-size bed in there.

Check out the new bathroom.

Hey, I think you should
check out the bathroom.

I'm gonna be the first
into the bathroom.

Oh, my gosh.

Oh, my gosh.

We have a shower.

We're not standing in a sink.
Oh, my gosh. This is great.

Nice.
- And we have
a composting toilet.

The bathroom situation was
definitely a little sketchy.

So that's my favorite
part about the renovation.

- Yeah, so you finally have
a brand-new door on the porch.
- Nice.

So we should head out there
and you should go grab
the dogs 'cause the dogs,

I'm sure, are going
to want to see it.

Oh, they're definitely
gonna wanna see this.

Oh, they're definitely
gonna wanna see this.

- All right, let's head out.
- Exactly. Thank you.

They're gonna
love their bunk beds.

My father wanted
to have a porch put
on the front of this camp,

and I feel that
I've kind of fulfilled his
dream of the cabin.

It's kind of a closure
for my father.

You know, it's been finished.

So, I just wish
he was here to see it.

We had 12 weeks
and $40,000.

You've got a camp now
with plenty of space,
plenty of light,

refreshed, new metal
roof, so nothing left to
do but hand you the keys.

Refreshed, new metal
roof, so nothing left to
do but hand you the keys.

- Ah, thank you.
- There you go.

And now go get the dogs.

All right, bye, guys.

- Enjoy.
- Thank you.

- Thank you very much.
- You're welcome.

What the Maine Cabin Masters
have given us here today,

you know, for the amount
of money that we paid
in on this camp,

it's unbelievable.

I know our corgis
will love it up here

and any other dogs
that come up to visit.

I can't thank them enough
for what they've done
for our family.

And I can't wait to
enjoy it with my family.

And I can't wait to
enjoy it with my family.

It is something
that's spectacular.

Now I get to pass that
on to the next generation.
