Maine Cabin Masters (2017–…): Season 8, Episode 6 - New Cabin in Tree, Two, One... - full transcript
Shelly Wheeler grew up splashing around in the bright blue water of China Lake. Now, with a growing family of her own, and her relatives dotting the shores in their perfect summer cabins, Shelly and her husband Travis want to be able to host family functions at their own camp. The only problem: their camp is too small; so small, their daughter hits her head when she stands up in her room. With a growing list of issues and three growing kids, the Wheelers reach out to the Cabin Masters to help them renovate and resize their lakeside home. There's just one thing standing in their way: one of the largest trees in Maine - it needs to come down without breaking the camp or the budget.
Man,
it's a nice day, honey!
We are headed to see
the Wheeler family.
We've done a little
work over the years,
but as the family
grows taller, we need
some updating.
I always get
a bump on my head.
- Nice.
What about this tree?
Ooh,
she's rotten over here.
Look how hollow that is.
So certainly,
it's a dangerous tree.
It's not going to be cheap,
I don't think.
Had my eye on a new demo toy.
I'm gonna up
my game this year.
Oh, you know
when Ryan's doing demo.
Stuff flies.
It's a game changer!
Oh my gosh, I'm gonna cry!
Man,
it's a nice day, honey!
Yeah. The ice just went
out so this is cold water.
So you paddle safely, got it?
-Don't fall in.
Where are
we going, Chase?
We are headed
to meet the Wheeler family,
on China Lake.
It's Shelly and Travis
and their three children.
- They bought
the camp in 2017.
- Nice.
And they're
just looking to kind of
update it, rearrange it,
so it makes a little more
sense as the family
gets bigger.
They're a hockey family,
so ice is out.
They're a hockey family,
so ice is out.
So time to, uh,
focus on summer.
Hockey season's over
and camp season has begun.
- You got it.
Nice spot.
Hi!
- Hi!
- Hey, guys!
We're the Wheelers.
I'm Travis.
-I'm Shelly.
- I'm Curtis.
- I'm Alana.
- And I'm Silas.
Welcome!
Nice
to meet you guys.
- Heard you love hockey?
- Love it!
You guys all play?
- Yes.
- Oh, cool.
Is she the enforcer?
- She's the goalie.
- Yeah, she's the goalie.
- She's the goalie.
- Yeah, she's the goalie.
Oh, nice!
So tell us
about the camp.
So we bought
the camp back in 2017.
It had been left unused
for many years before
we took it over.
Do you know about
the age of the camp?
Uh, somewhere around 1950.
- Okay.
- Wow.
Done a little work
over the years but, uh,
as the family grows
taller, it means...
...we need some updating.
Tell us what you like
about the camp.
I like China Lake.
My family grew up across
the other side of the lake.
I've got five siblings,
a lot of them have
property on the lake.
- Oh, nice.
- And my parents have
property on the lake.
- Oh, nice.
- And my parents have
property on the lake.
Um, so,
you know, we wanna, like,
freshen it up a little bit,
and be able to host
the family here.
The main things
that we're looking for is,
you know,
making an easier
living space.
The camp is very dark inside,
we're sort of looking to try
and brighten it up.
And a little
bit better sleeping
quarters for the kids.
So we're gonna make some
more room for you guys?
So Alana, her sleeping
area is the loft area.
About this tall.
- It worked good
for a few years,
but as she continued to grow,
the, uh, the ceiling
got shorter.
I always get, like,
a bump on my head.
- Jeez. You can't have that.
- In summer.
- Jeez. You can't have that.
- In summer.
It's like being in the penalty
box up there, huh?
Yeah!
And the boys
share a tiny little
bedroom in the back.
- It's been redone...
- Yeah.
...but I think
they'd like to have some
room to spread out,
as, you know,
Curtis gets a little older,
he wants a little more privacy
from his little brother.
Any special colors
in the rooms or anything
like that?
Yeah, I kinda
like darker colors,
so I can sleep in,
in the morning.
There we go, all right!
- You want a cave! All right.
- Yes. Exactly!
Cave, all right.
We'll see what
we can do!
So tell us a little bit about
the platforms down there.
The connect?
The connect?
There's a little
walkway between them.
Some of the snow and ice
has kinda pushed it down
towards the water,
so we'd like to have those
rebuilt and made safe.
One of the things
we'd like to have is, um,
some deck area off the side,
a place to relax and sit
and look at the water.
It's got good cedar
shingles on this side.
- Mm-hmm.
Um,
I noticed paddling,
in that there's little
bit of different siding
on the other side.
You wanna kinda make it
all a little more uniform?
- Yes.
I think there were
three types of siding.
And that baby blue,
can we keep that?
That's not
my favorite.
How about this,
what is your favorite?
How about this,
what is your favorite?
- I mean, I like greens.
- Okay.
And then tell us
about this tree as well.
That's the first thing
we noticed, paddling in.
- That thing is huge!
That is one
of the easiest ways
to spot the camp
from the lake.
Unfortunately,
half of it is dead, so.
We've had, kind of,
in the back of our minds,
the last few years,
like, is it gonna fall?
- That would hit a couple camps
around, I think, it's so huge.
- Yeah.
New platforms
down by the water.
More space,
more headroom for the kids.
Lighten it up in there.
A deck off to the side.
Get somebody in here,
take a look at the tree,
inspect it,
Get somebody in here,
take a look at the tree,
inspect it,
and if it needs to go,
you're all right with that.
How much are you looking
to put into the project?
Um, our budget is,
uh, $40,000.
Okay. And hockey
season's over.
-When would you
like the camp back?
School gets out
in the middle of June, so...
Okay. All right,
so that puts us
around 10 weeks.
- Yep, that'll work.
- Okay.
All right, so yeah,
I think, you know,
it all sounds doable.
We just need a set of keys.
Here you go.
All right,
see you, guys!
- Thank you, bye!
- Thank you.
We've had
a long list of things
to do over summer,
so this'll be great
for them to come in,
and really bring it up
to where it should be.
Check this place out.
Oh, wow.
Oh, it's way
bigger than it looks!
- Dark.
- This place is huge.
It's huge,
but it doesn't look
huge from outside.
It's really, really,
really dark.
It's really choppy.
It's weird.
This room has
a lot of potential,
but it is an ugly porch.
Well, it's a good
sized kitchen space.
I mean, main bedroom
out front there,
even that has a tiny
little window.
Doesn't have a lot
of light in it.
There's a small bedroom,
bathroom back there, we...
- The cave!
- ...we don't have to touch.
Can we at least
put a door here,
so he can have
a little privacy?
- Sure.
So that's the daughter's
loft bedroom.
Ooh, it's hot
up here, guys.
Oh, yeah. There's barely
any headroom up here.
And the way they framed up
that loft is just not...
- Safe?
- Safe.
I say increase
the roof pitch as much
as we can.
Will that give
her more headroom?
- Yeah.
Maybe bring it
all the way across?
- Okay.
All the way across,
so she gets a big, huge room?
No, so they'd share
with the brother.
Oh, I like this idea.
On the inside
of the Wheeler camp,
we are going to lighten it up.
Somehow reconfigure it
so the kids have larger
sleeping spaces.
Redo the kitchen,
and open up the area
Redo the kitchen,
and open up the area
in-between the main living
space and the porch.
Yeah, increasing that pitch
will give you tons
of room up there.
- Yes
If you added a good
sized deck right here,
you could hang out...
- Yes!
- ...right down onto that,
Go in on the side there,
get rid of that front door.
Move you stairs to right here.
What about this tree?
This tree looks dangerous.
Let's all go around
and see if we can touch.
I got... are you
guys touching?
Oh, yeah.
Where are you?
I got your hand.
- Are we all touching?
- Yep!
How long
do you think that is?
- How long is that?
On the exterior
of the camp,
we're going to move a door
from the front to the side,
where we'll add in
the new deck.
We'll also add new siding
to make it uniform all
the way around,
and deal with the large tree
that's on the property.
Let's paddle
out of here and call
the guys.
Demo day
at the Wheeler camp.
Demo day
at the Wheeler camp.
It's a little bit wet, but,
Dixie, Jedi, Ryan
and me are here
to just kinda rip
into it and see what
we're working with.
What's the goal for today?
We definitely
want a professional
to look at this tree,
kind of assess it.
And then mostly
all interior today.
Great
day for an inside.
- Let's go look at it.
- Let's do it!
- Let's go take a peek.
Nice. Dark.
Yeah, the first thing
you notice is the size of it,
and then the second is just
how dark it is in here.
So today, I think it's just
focusing on peeling
out the kitchen,
So today, I think it's just
focusing on peeling
out the kitchen,
peeling back some of
the siding and sheathing,
to kind of see what's going on
with all the framing up there.
All right.
Let's do it.
- Let's do it.
Rip and tear.
There we go.
- Perfect.
- And stay out!
Of course, we're gonna
be opening up the space
in-between the two rooms,
so there's cedar shakes
on the exterior, interior,
all around,
so there's cedar shakes
on the exterior, interior,
all around,
so we need to peel those back,
and see what type
of framing is in the walls.
The kitchen,
there's a nice sink cabinet
with a nice porcelain top,
and that's staying,
but everything else
is coming out.
- Oh, Pinnacle's here.
- Tree time.
All right, time to get
some answers.
My buddy Greg
from Pinnacle Tree
is gonna stop by.
We don't know how far
to give this camper until
we deal with the tree,
and if it's dead,
diseased, or dying,
or could damage something.
I mean, that's a very,
very expensive tree
to come down.
- We got questions!
- Sure.
What is it?
I think it's an
eastern cottonwood.
I mean, we see some pretty
big ones in the state, but,
boy, that's a monster.
Do you
think it's a record?
Have you guys cut a tree
that wide at base?
I haven't seen one that wide
in Canyonback County.
- Let's get a tape
on that thing.
- Absolutely.
- Let's get a tape
on that thing.
- Absolutely.
Where do we
measure from?
Starts at
the root flare.
- So right here.
- Yeah.
- What was the total?
- 16 feet!
Cool!
- Might be a record.
We'll call it in to the state.
Ooh, she's rotten
over here, look how
hollow that is.
Yeah, there's a big
cavity in the base of it.
What happens
with these crotches,
water and debris
runs down in there,
and slowly erodes it.
You can see a recess
line going all the way
down the tree.
So certainly,
it's a dangerous tree.
- Yeah?
I mean,
these leaders could separate
basically at any time.
I mean,
these leaders could separate
basically at any time.
It is going to take
a lot of the budget
to get the tree down.
It's not going to be cheap,
I don't think.
That's $10,000,
right there.
Something was living
underneath here.
Demo day at the Wheeler camp.
Dixie, Jedi, Ryan
and me are here.
We don't know
how much of our budget's
gonna be taken out
removing the big tree.
So all we're looking
to do is to get into that
front porch walls,
rip out the kitchen,
and see what
we're working with.
So we're just
poking into this wall,
see what's going on.
There's not a lot
of headers or anything
to support the weight.
So we'll have to replace
it with a beam.
There's definitely some,
uh, old carpenter ant
damage there.
Replacing the framing that's
there with beams and posts,
will open up that space
again to support the loft.
I had my eye
on a new demo tool.
I'm gonna up my
game this year.
I went from a two-pound hammer
to a three-pound hammer.
I'm getting older,
I'm not as strong,
I'm getting older,
I'm not as strong,
so I had to get
a heavier hammer,
you know, it's all
math and physics.
A new three-pound hammer
is a lot more destructive
than a two-pound hammer.
I'm gonna knock that whole
piece of plywood off.
Okay.
I wanna get the big
wall out, I wanna see
some light in there.
This thing doesn't
stand a chance.
Hopefully it'll all come off,
be less work.
Going in the trenches.
So rather than take
all the shingles off,
that was a lot of work,
I think I can knock
these panels right off
with my new toy.
Oh! Did you get it?
Oh! Did you get it?
It's a game changer!
Oh, you know
when Ryan's doing demo,
stuff flies.
It's a pretty good
idea to take cover.
Heads up!
Hey, look out below!
He just a bull in
a china shop.
I do like my new hammer,
but that might not be
the job for this.
So I'm gonna set
myself up for success.
So I'm gonna set
myself up for success.
Game over.
Look out!
You guys ready?
Timber, ho!
This wall's gonna roll!
That opened it up.
It's his mess.
You got the wall on the loft,
and it did let a lot
of light in there.
Now we got an idea
of what it's gonna feel like.
I did make a mess,
but it's gonna get done.
- Clean up, aisle 12!
- I got it!
The town only
allows you to have
the peak of your roof
at 20 feet.
We were just trying
to determine how much
headspace they're gonna
gain in the loft area.
You're on the ground.
- On the ground?
- Yep.
That's about 16'6".
So we got
another four, five feet.
- Yep.
And they'll have ample
headroom up in that loft.
And I think Chase
was thinking that we could
build up that outer wall
And I think Chase
was thinking that we could
build up that outer wall
where that door was gonna
be a little bit, too.
It's gonna open up
a lot of room in that loft.
Lovely. Figuring it out.
Look out below.
Just like
Thor's hammer.
It's way easier.
Look at
the light!
I heard you guys talking,
how much room can we go up?
- A lot.
- Yeah, I mean,
he was, like, an extra five
feet on top of the roof.
Oh, wow.
- So they'll have quite
a bit of head space in there.
Oh, wow.
- So they'll have quite
a bit of head space in there.
Yeah, and then this loft
can run all the way across
to the kitchen.
It would give you access
into that space.
Head off that peak,
so that those two by fours
there are out of the way.
Then you have access
to more space over there.
Head off down here,
so all this is opened.
That will give
them a lot of space.
- It'll be awesome.
Let's head off out of here.
Sounds good to me.
I think the next steps
are to get in here,
do a little bit more
demo on the interior,
ground's still a little soft,
so we need to make
sure all the frost is out
of the ground
so we need to make
sure all the frost is out
of the ground
so any settling, you know,
happens before we start
levelling it out,
and then it's really a matter
of waiting for good weather,
and start tearing
off the roof.
Let's make like
a tree and leave.
All right, that's
moving everything here.
- Okay.
I'm at, like, 19 now.
It's week three here
at the Wheeler camp.
Uh, the wheel is turning
and we can't slow down.
The back edge
of the camp was about
six inches down in the mud.
So we just find
our high point,
and then we'll bring
the rest of the camp up to it.
Every one of these posts
was sitting on pucks,
but every puck was
sinking into the ground.
Camp's up in the air,
the camp's dry,
Camp's up in the air,
the camp's dry,
but it is soaked
where all these posts sit.
So we're gonna get
new pucks in there,
get some styrofoam,
and keep the camp
from moving.
We'll fill the hole
with crushed stone.
Allows water
to flow underneath it,
and not erode
underneath the pucks.
We used a foam
board for frost,
it allows two inches of play,
for any frost that's gonna
come up through the ground.
This at least allows
the ground to move a little
bit underneath the post
This at least allows
the ground to move a little
bit underneath the post
without the post
actually sinking.
Three quarter.
Perfect.
This way.
So we're sitting tight
on all of them, right?
Boys! Nice job.
It's week four
at the Wheeler camp,
and in the last week,
the guys have removed
the siding
and replaced the old windows.
The next step is to
put up cedar siding
so that the camp
is uniform all around.
Cedar shakes look great,
but they are labor intensive.
So we want to make sure
that we get on those
right away,
so that we stay
on time and budget.
So the guys are cranking
out the Wheeler camp,
they got the roof
stripped off this morning,
and they're getting
prepped and ready
to pull out some
of this framing.
This wall will come out,
this will all get new beams,
a new center beam
supporting everything here,
so this wall
will be opened up,
you'll have a nice room,
looking over the water.
You'll have a nice room,
looking over the water.
The roof pitch
will be increased,
and you'll have
loft space from there,
all the way over to there.
Give the kids
more sleeping area.
- Good luck!
- Nice!
- We can pull this.
- Pretty tight.
Pull that up.
Throughout the Wheeler
camp, it's a big day.
Our friends at Pinnacle
Tree are here,
and that big girl's
coming down.
So there's a lot of excitement
about this tree.
I thought for sure it was
a record-breaker.
We reported it to the state,
but it's a couple
inches short.
It's coming down either way.
It's coming down either way.
You know, we hate
cutting down trees.
And it's sad to see
this one come down,
but it's at the end
of its life,
and it's just gonna
make it much more safe,
and it's gonna protect
their investment.
Ready!
Even though
this is costing a quarter
of the budget,
we're saving money
by not having plumbing
and electrical.
We're using stock
pieces for the dock,
which is gonna bring
the cost of this camp down
and within the budget.
Nice, boys.
Oh, I love it.
It's week five
at the Wheeler camp,
and the guys have
installed new beams
to help support the loft.
The next step is
to put in flooring
and frame up the walls.
The Wheelers have
three growing kids,
so to help with that issue,
we have raised
the height of the loft,
to give them more head space.
We're about midway
through the Wheeler build.
The guys removed
the front door.
We're able
to reuse the windows
and place them back in,
so it matches.
We got our 10 by
20 deck prepped.
We got our 10 by
20 deck prepped.
We got a French door in there.
If you come around
the back, you can see
we're starting to see
the shake to tie
everything together.
As you're coming
into the main house,
you can see extensive
beam work's been done.
We removed this front wall,
built a nice beam system
to carry all the weight
of the two roof
lines coming in.
Some nice four by six hemlock
beams tying in back there.
The back of the camp
got to remain the same.
We still have the nice
big bathroom.
The main bedroom,
and now we have all kinds
of sleeping space upstairs.
Wow.
As you can see, the new loft,
lot more headroom,
As you can see, the new loft,
lot more headroom,
they ripped off the old loft,
added a huge
knee wall up here,
where you get a lot of light
from the back as well,
and a nice view of the front.
Access will come up
here through a ladder.
We'll get
our last roof rafter on,
and we'll sheathe this.
I mean, this is a huge space.
The kids couldn't even barely
stand up here before,
and now look at it.
The goal today is
finish up the rafters,
and start tying things
back together.
We got one gable end
left to frame in,
then we're gonna sheathe
the rest of it.
We got rain coming in,
so we want to get a roof
on this as fast as possible.
So we want to get a roof
on this as fast as possible.
So, it's nice to be able
to have your wall sheathed,
and all your buildings
tied together
before you get up on the roof.
When there's no sheathing,
and the framing's
not completed,
it makes it very unstable.
So, we're gonna sheathe
all the walls,
and then,
we're gonna jump on the roof.
Rapid fire!
Rapid fire!
Yahtzee, baby!
Hold on.
She didn't get wrapped
and shaked.
Nice work, guys!
Where do you
want it, bud?
So, Rodney got
LSBs, so we could furr out
So, Rodney got
LSBs, so we could furr out
existing framing
to new framing.
LSB is better known
as particle board,
and it comes
in four by eight foot sheets.
It'll furr out
where we tie it in
to the existing sheathing,
then we can shake over it all.
How do you like that combo?
Uh...
Oh, here comes...
Look at him.
This guy is like butter,
look at him.
That's years of practice.
Look at him,
going right up to the void.
You'd think
he was snowboarding.
Yahoo.
This looks like a fun project.
I haven't been back in awhile,
so it's cool to see
all the changes.
The massive tree came down,
we've got lots of ideas.
Bill's here with me today.
Hopefully, he can help me out.
Hi!
- Hi.
- Hi.
Hi!
What are you guys up to?
We've got the job
of supervising today.
Chase couldn't make it,
so that's perfect.
- Well!
Hey, hey, good,
I can take his place.
Hey guys,
Bill's the boss today!
-
Yeah, hey,
I'll be watching you close.
When Chase isn't here,
seniority comes into play.
When Chase isn't here,
seniority comes into play.
Bill's definitely got
that covered.
Yeah.
Wow.
Wow, this thing was massive.
Make a nice little
flower garden in there.
I was thinking
that, too.
Yeah, you can clean that out,
put some soil in there.
Yeah, it's gonna be here.
We're not moving it,
so at least we'll do something
to pretty it up.
It's kind of rotted
in the middle,
so it will be easy
to clear it out.
I'm gonna make
a nice little design,
and we can fill it in
with some dirt,
and plant some nice flowers.
We got a little bit
of rain coming in.
We did really well today
to get everything
all framed up.
Loft is all sheathed in,
windows are all done.
Last thing to do is
sheathe this roof,
and beat the rain.
Hey Ash, is that
a two-by-eight
leaning against
Rodney's trailer right there?
This?
Yeah.
Ryan screamed,
and asked if I could come up
and lend a hand.
They needed, just,
somebody in the middle there
to nail down the boards.
They wanted to finish it off
before the rain came,
so I jumped up on there,
and helped them out.
So I jumped up on there,
and helped them out.
We'll just pass the gun
right down the line.
What did I run?
Two, three guys to a drill.
Coming over!
Right there.
Right there, Josh.
Nice, honey!
Yahoo!
And that's up.
Honey, you're kicking butt!
Jedi, you're scaring me.
Out.
I got no more nails.
We're out of nails.
We got rain coming in.
We're so close.
I'm gonna find
enough to finish,
just at least
get the roof sheathed.
Come on, baby.
We gotta manifest it.
We gotta manifest it.
I got no more nails.
We're out of nails.
Halfway through
the Wheeler job,
we got
all the side sheathed...
We got rain coming in.
...we started cranking
on the roof,
and we really wanted
to get it done,
and we ran out of nails.
All right, where are they?
Where are my nails?
Come on, baby.
Now, if I would have said,
"Oh, let's go home early,"
or Ashley was the boss,
said, "Let's go home early,"
we would have had
piles of nails,
but you know how it is.
Oh, baby!
Two sleeves! Two sleeves!
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Yes! Yes! Yes!
That'll get us
the rest of this one board.
One nail. All right.
Can you push down on this one?
I'm out.
Is that it?
Yep.
Done!
They're done.
We got
half the roof up.
We got
half the roof up.
We'll check the forecast.
If that rain's gonna hold off,
I think we'll be all right
'til the morning.
This close.
It's Week 6
at the Wheeler camp.
The rain held off long enough
for the guys
to finish up the roof,
then they were able to install
then they were able to install
the windows
in the loft space...
Nice work
on that framing, boys.
- Thanks.
...and finish up
framing the deck.
The deck will give
the Wheeler family
more space to entertain
friends and family,
and be able to enjoy
that beautiful view.
The next step
is to move inside
and get our walls closed in.
And get our walls closed in.
Week 7 here
at the Wheeler camp.
We've got a lot of pine
and a lot of trim to go.
The majority of the framing,
building's already done,
so now it's time
to close everything in.
Once we're done sheathing
the inside,
Once we're done sheathing
the inside,
we're gonna set up
for the island
and the cabinets
in the new kitchen.
Ashley's picked out
a great solid stain
for this camp,
so it's time to get painting.
The homeowners said
they like green colors,
so we're going
with a nice sage.
Nice cut!
It's Week 9
at the Wheeler camp.
There's just
a few last-minute things
that need to be done.
Chase is working on
the ladder,
Jedi's working on
the kitchen counters,
so I just want to dig
in the old stump
and see if there's enough area
for me to plant
a little flower garden.
How's your gardening going?
Hey.
What are you doing?
I'm painting.
The last man
to get to the job site
The last man
to get to the job site
usually doesn't get to pick
what he does,
and that's me today,
so I'm painting.
I shouldn't have come out here
if I didn't wanna help.
That's how I get you.
I got a deal for you.
If you help me
with this garden,
I'll help paint the floor.
Yeah, I don't know
about working with dead trees.
I only like things
that are grateful and dead.
No kidding.
Well, I'm grateful.
- Want to make a deal?
- Sure.
- Let's make a deal.
- Okay.
Let's make a deal.
Dug everything out
with the help
of my lovely husband...
- Is that good?
- That looks great.
I like the design.
...and then we were able
to plant the flowers in.
This looks good, right?
It can even be a bench. Look.
I like it.
Sit right here,
look at this,
have your flowers
right beside you.
What it's like on a windy day.
What it's like on a windy day.
That wasn't very windy.
- But it is kind of nice.
- Or is it like on a windy day?
It was a great way to preserve
the memory of the tree,
but also, a great way
to just add some beauty
to the old stump,
and to the surrounding area.
It's kind of
the circle of life, you know?
It was a shame
to cut this down,
but we created
something beautiful.
Yeah.
Well, circle around,
now you gotta help me
to paint.
I'm feeling more like
a straight line outta here.
Just kidding. Thank you.
Thank you.
Got it.
This is the main bedroom,
but the good thing about it is
we didn't really need
to do much.
This pink paint is reddish.
Ashley! Honey!
Ashley!
Wife is nowhere to be found
when the painting starts!
She's hiding from me.
Things
are wheeling down
at the Wheeler camp.
We're down to the last week,
and it's looking good.
One of the only things
left was the countertops.
We're gonna piece it together.
We didn't have anything
big enough.
We had long enough,
but not wide enough.
Can I get you
to hold this piece?
Sure.
I'll be cutting
this piece off,
so hold right down
on this whole thing.
Ashley!
Wife is nowhere to be found
when the painting starts!
She's hiding from me.
Let's do this.
Where's my wife?
Lend me a hand.
We're gonna teach
Ashley a lesson.
I decided to help her
with her project,
put my projects on hold.
I was painting away
after lunch,
and she just disappeared,
so I think
I'll play a trick on her.
No good deed goes unpunished.
Okay.
Ryan!
Ryan?
Ryan!
Yes?
Yes?
What is going on
in here?
I died.
I can't finish.
Oh, that's you.
I didn't even notice that.
I was just noticing
the color of the floor.
Why is the floor pink?
I held still
for, like, two minutes.
Chase painted me perfectly,
and all she noticed
was the color.
Go figure.
It's pink.
It's reddish.
Hopefully,
it dries a lot darker
than it looks right now.
Oh, my gosh!
You can never trust
these guys with paint,
ever, ever, ever, ever,
ever, ever, ever, ever, ever.
I'm just gonna finish it off,
and I'm gonna hope,
when it dries,
and I'm gonna hope,
when it dries,
it dries a nice, darker color,
it doesn't look so pink.
The Wheelers had
an awkward set of stairs,
kind of tucked in this corner,
up into
a very small loft space.
Now, they've got
a loft ladder.
I decided to put
the handhold in the center.
There wasn't a lot
of meat here on the sides,
so you go up,
you can grab hold
in the center.
Good access,
and a good sized space
for the kids.
So, our friend Jeff
from Great Northern Docks
is coming up today,
and he's replacing
those old decks.
Jedi and I got
the old dock out of here,
so now they're gonna have
two brand-new decks
that are gonna be connected,
and that can stay in
full-time.
-Jeff, how are we doing?
- Hey, Ryan!
-What's happening?
- Good to see you.
-Good to see you.
- You brought
the army today, huh?
- We're ready.
We're ready to do it.
- Awesome. Awesome.
Yeah, so you're replacing
the two platforms over there,
and the walk sections
in between them.
Yes, and we've got them
the same size
as they were before,
so no issues with code.
Everything's gonna be perfect.
Awesome.
They're gonna be pumped.
Well, I can't wait to see it.
- Oh, it's gonna be awesome.
- Thanks, buddy.
- Oh, it's gonna be awesome.
- Thanks, buddy.
- We'll get going on it.
- We'll see you in a bit.
All right.
I sent Jeff my drawing.
He went in,
found sections
that were premade
they had in stock,
to keep the cost down.
The front platforms
are grandfathered in.
We can't go any bigger,
but if we can use stuff
he has in stock,
we don't have to have
custom platforms made.
It's less money,
it's less labor,
and we can spend
the money inside.
Ooh, look at that.
Look at that!
I forgot my hockey skills.
- Take care
of those skills.
I forgot my hockey skills.
- Take care
of those skills.
Don't point that at me.
This is a big hockey family,
so I'm gonna do
a little decorating
with this hockey stick.
Hey, five hole!
Goal!
Your kitchen's done,
your ladder's done,
your floor's done.
It actually dried up nicely.
It's a nice dark red now.
Camp looks fantastic.
Great Northern Docks
looks killer.
Hey, do you have anything
you want to say?
I say, um,
the team did a great job.
We've reached our goal.
- Um...
- Oh, nice!
Sound the horn,
let's get out of here.
Sound the horn,
let's get out of here.
- Yep!
- All right!
- Goal!
- Goal!
Ashley, call your team.
Over the last few days,
my crew and I have come in,
and we have brought
all of the furniture in.
- Oh, that's it, that's it.
- Right there.
- Oh, that's it, that's it.
- Right there.
Perfect. Awesome.
We were able to check off
a lot of things
on their wish list.
They wanted
a bigger, more open area
to host family and friends,
they wanted
more space for the kids.
We gave them
a larger loft area.
I'm gonna put up
some sort of divider
so that the kids can feel
like they have
their own little bedrooms.
Right?
The family is
a huge hockey family,
so I wanted to just kind of
make something
to just kind of bring
the hockey theme
into the cabin.
I had an old hockey stick
kicking around,
some old hooks,
some old hooks,
and made a nice coatrack.
All right.
So there you go.
Hockey stick coat rack.
There they are.
All right.
Oh, my gosh,
I'm gonna cry!
So, the Wheeler family
had $40,000 and 10 weeks
to get this project completed.
Their big requests were
dealing with the large tree
in front of the camp...
It was definitely
a big project.
Took up a lot of the budget.
...a new deck,
opening the camp up
on the inside,
lightening it up,
also increasing
the size of the loft
for more headroom
for the kids.
Ready to get summer started?
-Yeah.
- Yes.
See the camp?
Oh, my gosh, I can't wait!
-Dad, like, pick it up.
Let's go!
-Dad, like, pick it up.
Let's go!
-Speed this up!
- Oh.
- There they are.
All right.
- I can see the dock!
Look at
the new platform.
Whoa!
- Look at it.
- All right!
- Nice!
- New platforms?
-That is crazy!
- Oh, my gosh!
- It looks so good!
That is
wicked crazy.
Oh, my gosh,
I'm gonna cry!
And the house.
Look at it!
This is insane.
Whoa!
Are we
at the right place?
- Oh, my gosh.
- Oh, my gosh, Mom.
I absolutely love it,
and to see that it looked
like a two-story camp was
and to see that it looked
like a two-story camp was
- a little bit shocking,
and exciting.
- Yep.
Hi, guys!
- Welcome back!
- Hello! Hi!
Let's head on up.
Your new platforms!
How cool, right guys?
- Wow.
- Oh, my goodness!
Decks being level
and actually looking like
they were stable and safe.
Before,
we could only use part of it,
so now
it's full, usable space.
A space where we can enjoy
being down on the water.
So of course,
probably
the first thing you noticed
was your tree's gone.
- Yes.
- Yes.
- Yeah.
- I dug it out, and planted
- Yeah.
- I dug it out, and planted
a pretty little flower garden
in there.
It looks so good now!
We won't miss
raking all the leaves up.
- Oh, yeah.
- Oh, yeah!
Oh, yes.
First thing, that tree
had to come down,
and then we were able
to get going on the camp.
We were able to level out
the camp a little bit more,
got a new deck on the place,
took the old loft off
and bumped it up,
and expanded it
and resided everything
with cedar shakes,
one style of siding
around the entire camp.
Right.
The color is beautiful.
- Yeah, I know.
- I never would have chosen it,
but I love it.
- Yeah, I know.
- I never would have chosen it,
but I love it.
It's a pretty sage.
It's exactly what
I wanted, without knowing.
Yeah, okay, great!
The side deck was always
kind of a dream for us.
I think it's perfect.
I can't wait to go inside.
I know.
I'm nervous.
- I know, let's not keep them
any longer.
- Head right up the stairs,
and head right on in.
- Okay.
Let's go in.
Open it, open it, open it!
- There it is.
Let me see. Um...
-Oh, my!
It looks beautiful!
-Okay.
- Wow.
-Okay.
- Wow.
I love it!
Oh, my gosh, I love it.
-I love it!
You know, before,
it was just,
you had your loft staircase
kind of tucked in the corner,
-there were supports running
every which way...
-Yeah.
- ...so when we took off
the loft roof to bump it up,
we opened up this whole space,
wall of windows right there
looking out over the water.
This light
is just so pretty, isn't it?
This light
is just so pretty, isn't it?
- Yeah, it is,
and the lake...
- It seems brighter here.
-Right.
- It is so much brighter.
We left
the kitchen sink here,
and gave you new cabinets,
new countertops.
Cleaned it up
a little.
- Yes!
- The room looks great.
The refrigerator was moved,
and it allowed
for more countertop space.
They preserved the bar area.
The kitchen is beautiful.
Continue on.
Ooh, yes!
- Oh, there's a hockey stick!
- Wow!
We made you a nice rack.
- With a hockey stick!
- Oh, my gosh!
Oh, my goodness!
Oh, my goodness!
We've been talking
about doing that.
- Yeah!
Well, there you go.
And then, you know,
some dark curtains here.
'Cause you want a man cave.
Yeah.
Uh, I like to sleep in,
so I wanted it
a little darker,
so they did that
with the black shades,
and also adding
the hockey sticks
into the room,
special to me.
I love it.
Ooh!
- It's something.
- My goodness!
- Perfect!
- Wow.
Head on up
to the loft.
Check it out, you guys.
Okay.
Let's see it.
Are you excited, Si?
-Let's see what's up here.
- Stairs that I can
actually use.
Oh, my gosh!
It looks so good!
It's so pretty!
I love it up there.
There's a lot of light
and headspace,
and at our old camp,
I always hit my head,
and I didn't want
to hit my head anymore.
So it's
two separate areas,
all the headspace
that you could need,
so you guys
won't have to worry about
bonking your heads.
Oh, my gosh, I love it.
Oh, my gosh, I love it.
China Lake is
very special to my family,
and we kind of
always just had, like,
the ugly duckling cabin,
where it wasn't always
safe to be here,
and so it's nice that,
you know, I feel like
we can have my family
over here now.
We had $40,000 and 10 weeks
to get the project done.
We were able to raise the roof
for the loft area,
and increase the size of it,
opening up the camp,
letting more light in,
got a deck in there,
level, stable platforms
down by the water.
I just need
to give you the keys,
and it's ready for you
for the summer.
- Great. Thank you.
- Yay!
- Great. Thank you.
- Yay!
- You're welcome.
- Thank you!
Thank you, guys!
I feel like what makes
the camp so special is, like,
all the memories we make here.
Just being on the lake
is so nice.
I want
to say thank you
to the Maine Cabin Masters.
They really
fixed this place up,
and I think we'll enjoy
spending more time here.
We feel
very blessed and thankful
that we've been part of this.
It's more than
we could have dreamed.
We love it.
it's a nice day, honey!
We are headed to see
the Wheeler family.
We've done a little
work over the years,
but as the family
grows taller, we need
some updating.
I always get
a bump on my head.
- Nice.
What about this tree?
Ooh,
she's rotten over here.
Look how hollow that is.
So certainly,
it's a dangerous tree.
It's not going to be cheap,
I don't think.
Had my eye on a new demo toy.
I'm gonna up
my game this year.
Oh, you know
when Ryan's doing demo.
Stuff flies.
It's a game changer!
Oh my gosh, I'm gonna cry!
Man,
it's a nice day, honey!
Yeah. The ice just went
out so this is cold water.
So you paddle safely, got it?
-Don't fall in.
Where are
we going, Chase?
We are headed
to meet the Wheeler family,
on China Lake.
It's Shelly and Travis
and their three children.
- They bought
the camp in 2017.
- Nice.
And they're
just looking to kind of
update it, rearrange it,
so it makes a little more
sense as the family
gets bigger.
They're a hockey family,
so ice is out.
They're a hockey family,
so ice is out.
So time to, uh,
focus on summer.
Hockey season's over
and camp season has begun.
- You got it.
Nice spot.
Hi!
- Hi!
- Hey, guys!
We're the Wheelers.
I'm Travis.
-I'm Shelly.
- I'm Curtis.
- I'm Alana.
- And I'm Silas.
Welcome!
Nice
to meet you guys.
- Heard you love hockey?
- Love it!
You guys all play?
- Yes.
- Oh, cool.
Is she the enforcer?
- She's the goalie.
- Yeah, she's the goalie.
- She's the goalie.
- Yeah, she's the goalie.
Oh, nice!
So tell us
about the camp.
So we bought
the camp back in 2017.
It had been left unused
for many years before
we took it over.
Do you know about
the age of the camp?
Uh, somewhere around 1950.
- Okay.
- Wow.
Done a little work
over the years but, uh,
as the family grows
taller, it means...
...we need some updating.
Tell us what you like
about the camp.
I like China Lake.
My family grew up across
the other side of the lake.
I've got five siblings,
a lot of them have
property on the lake.
- Oh, nice.
- And my parents have
property on the lake.
- Oh, nice.
- And my parents have
property on the lake.
Um, so,
you know, we wanna, like,
freshen it up a little bit,
and be able to host
the family here.
The main things
that we're looking for is,
you know,
making an easier
living space.
The camp is very dark inside,
we're sort of looking to try
and brighten it up.
And a little
bit better sleeping
quarters for the kids.
So we're gonna make some
more room for you guys?
So Alana, her sleeping
area is the loft area.
About this tall.
- It worked good
for a few years,
but as she continued to grow,
the, uh, the ceiling
got shorter.
I always get, like,
a bump on my head.
- Jeez. You can't have that.
- In summer.
- Jeez. You can't have that.
- In summer.
It's like being in the penalty
box up there, huh?
Yeah!
And the boys
share a tiny little
bedroom in the back.
- It's been redone...
- Yeah.
...but I think
they'd like to have some
room to spread out,
as, you know,
Curtis gets a little older,
he wants a little more privacy
from his little brother.
Any special colors
in the rooms or anything
like that?
Yeah, I kinda
like darker colors,
so I can sleep in,
in the morning.
There we go, all right!
- You want a cave! All right.
- Yes. Exactly!
Cave, all right.
We'll see what
we can do!
So tell us a little bit about
the platforms down there.
The connect?
The connect?
There's a little
walkway between them.
Some of the snow and ice
has kinda pushed it down
towards the water,
so we'd like to have those
rebuilt and made safe.
One of the things
we'd like to have is, um,
some deck area off the side,
a place to relax and sit
and look at the water.
It's got good cedar
shingles on this side.
- Mm-hmm.
Um,
I noticed paddling,
in that there's little
bit of different siding
on the other side.
You wanna kinda make it
all a little more uniform?
- Yes.
I think there were
three types of siding.
And that baby blue,
can we keep that?
That's not
my favorite.
How about this,
what is your favorite?
How about this,
what is your favorite?
- I mean, I like greens.
- Okay.
And then tell us
about this tree as well.
That's the first thing
we noticed, paddling in.
- That thing is huge!
That is one
of the easiest ways
to spot the camp
from the lake.
Unfortunately,
half of it is dead, so.
We've had, kind of,
in the back of our minds,
the last few years,
like, is it gonna fall?
- That would hit a couple camps
around, I think, it's so huge.
- Yeah.
New platforms
down by the water.
More space,
more headroom for the kids.
Lighten it up in there.
A deck off to the side.
Get somebody in here,
take a look at the tree,
inspect it,
Get somebody in here,
take a look at the tree,
inspect it,
and if it needs to go,
you're all right with that.
How much are you looking
to put into the project?
Um, our budget is,
uh, $40,000.
Okay. And hockey
season's over.
-When would you
like the camp back?
School gets out
in the middle of June, so...
Okay. All right,
so that puts us
around 10 weeks.
- Yep, that'll work.
- Okay.
All right, so yeah,
I think, you know,
it all sounds doable.
We just need a set of keys.
Here you go.
All right,
see you, guys!
- Thank you, bye!
- Thank you.
We've had
a long list of things
to do over summer,
so this'll be great
for them to come in,
and really bring it up
to where it should be.
Check this place out.
Oh, wow.
Oh, it's way
bigger than it looks!
- Dark.
- This place is huge.
It's huge,
but it doesn't look
huge from outside.
It's really, really,
really dark.
It's really choppy.
It's weird.
This room has
a lot of potential,
but it is an ugly porch.
Well, it's a good
sized kitchen space.
I mean, main bedroom
out front there,
even that has a tiny
little window.
Doesn't have a lot
of light in it.
There's a small bedroom,
bathroom back there, we...
- The cave!
- ...we don't have to touch.
Can we at least
put a door here,
so he can have
a little privacy?
- Sure.
So that's the daughter's
loft bedroom.
Ooh, it's hot
up here, guys.
Oh, yeah. There's barely
any headroom up here.
And the way they framed up
that loft is just not...
- Safe?
- Safe.
I say increase
the roof pitch as much
as we can.
Will that give
her more headroom?
- Yeah.
Maybe bring it
all the way across?
- Okay.
All the way across,
so she gets a big, huge room?
No, so they'd share
with the brother.
Oh, I like this idea.
On the inside
of the Wheeler camp,
we are going to lighten it up.
Somehow reconfigure it
so the kids have larger
sleeping spaces.
Redo the kitchen,
and open up the area
Redo the kitchen,
and open up the area
in-between the main living
space and the porch.
Yeah, increasing that pitch
will give you tons
of room up there.
- Yes
If you added a good
sized deck right here,
you could hang out...
- Yes!
- ...right down onto that,
Go in on the side there,
get rid of that front door.
Move you stairs to right here.
What about this tree?
This tree looks dangerous.
Let's all go around
and see if we can touch.
I got... are you
guys touching?
Oh, yeah.
Where are you?
I got your hand.
- Are we all touching?
- Yep!
How long
do you think that is?
- How long is that?
On the exterior
of the camp,
we're going to move a door
from the front to the side,
where we'll add in
the new deck.
We'll also add new siding
to make it uniform all
the way around,
and deal with the large tree
that's on the property.
Let's paddle
out of here and call
the guys.
Demo day
at the Wheeler camp.
Demo day
at the Wheeler camp.
It's a little bit wet, but,
Dixie, Jedi, Ryan
and me are here
to just kinda rip
into it and see what
we're working with.
What's the goal for today?
We definitely
want a professional
to look at this tree,
kind of assess it.
And then mostly
all interior today.
Great
day for an inside.
- Let's go look at it.
- Let's do it!
- Let's go take a peek.
Nice. Dark.
Yeah, the first thing
you notice is the size of it,
and then the second is just
how dark it is in here.
So today, I think it's just
focusing on peeling
out the kitchen,
So today, I think it's just
focusing on peeling
out the kitchen,
peeling back some of
the siding and sheathing,
to kind of see what's going on
with all the framing up there.
All right.
Let's do it.
- Let's do it.
Rip and tear.
There we go.
- Perfect.
- And stay out!
Of course, we're gonna
be opening up the space
in-between the two rooms,
so there's cedar shakes
on the exterior, interior,
all around,
so there's cedar shakes
on the exterior, interior,
all around,
so we need to peel those back,
and see what type
of framing is in the walls.
The kitchen,
there's a nice sink cabinet
with a nice porcelain top,
and that's staying,
but everything else
is coming out.
- Oh, Pinnacle's here.
- Tree time.
All right, time to get
some answers.
My buddy Greg
from Pinnacle Tree
is gonna stop by.
We don't know how far
to give this camper until
we deal with the tree,
and if it's dead,
diseased, or dying,
or could damage something.
I mean, that's a very,
very expensive tree
to come down.
- We got questions!
- Sure.
What is it?
I think it's an
eastern cottonwood.
I mean, we see some pretty
big ones in the state, but,
boy, that's a monster.
Do you
think it's a record?
Have you guys cut a tree
that wide at base?
I haven't seen one that wide
in Canyonback County.
- Let's get a tape
on that thing.
- Absolutely.
- Let's get a tape
on that thing.
- Absolutely.
Where do we
measure from?
Starts at
the root flare.
- So right here.
- Yeah.
- What was the total?
- 16 feet!
Cool!
- Might be a record.
We'll call it in to the state.
Ooh, she's rotten
over here, look how
hollow that is.
Yeah, there's a big
cavity in the base of it.
What happens
with these crotches,
water and debris
runs down in there,
and slowly erodes it.
You can see a recess
line going all the way
down the tree.
So certainly,
it's a dangerous tree.
- Yeah?
I mean,
these leaders could separate
basically at any time.
I mean,
these leaders could separate
basically at any time.
It is going to take
a lot of the budget
to get the tree down.
It's not going to be cheap,
I don't think.
That's $10,000,
right there.
Something was living
underneath here.
Demo day at the Wheeler camp.
Dixie, Jedi, Ryan
and me are here.
We don't know
how much of our budget's
gonna be taken out
removing the big tree.
So all we're looking
to do is to get into that
front porch walls,
rip out the kitchen,
and see what
we're working with.
So we're just
poking into this wall,
see what's going on.
There's not a lot
of headers or anything
to support the weight.
So we'll have to replace
it with a beam.
There's definitely some,
uh, old carpenter ant
damage there.
Replacing the framing that's
there with beams and posts,
will open up that space
again to support the loft.
I had my eye
on a new demo tool.
I'm gonna up my
game this year.
I went from a two-pound hammer
to a three-pound hammer.
I'm getting older,
I'm not as strong,
I'm getting older,
I'm not as strong,
so I had to get
a heavier hammer,
you know, it's all
math and physics.
A new three-pound hammer
is a lot more destructive
than a two-pound hammer.
I'm gonna knock that whole
piece of plywood off.
Okay.
I wanna get the big
wall out, I wanna see
some light in there.
This thing doesn't
stand a chance.
Hopefully it'll all come off,
be less work.
Going in the trenches.
So rather than take
all the shingles off,
that was a lot of work,
I think I can knock
these panels right off
with my new toy.
Oh! Did you get it?
Oh! Did you get it?
It's a game changer!
Oh, you know
when Ryan's doing demo,
stuff flies.
It's a pretty good
idea to take cover.
Heads up!
Hey, look out below!
He just a bull in
a china shop.
I do like my new hammer,
but that might not be
the job for this.
So I'm gonna set
myself up for success.
So I'm gonna set
myself up for success.
Game over.
Look out!
You guys ready?
Timber, ho!
This wall's gonna roll!
That opened it up.
It's his mess.
You got the wall on the loft,
and it did let a lot
of light in there.
Now we got an idea
of what it's gonna feel like.
I did make a mess,
but it's gonna get done.
- Clean up, aisle 12!
- I got it!
The town only
allows you to have
the peak of your roof
at 20 feet.
We were just trying
to determine how much
headspace they're gonna
gain in the loft area.
You're on the ground.
- On the ground?
- Yep.
That's about 16'6".
So we got
another four, five feet.
- Yep.
And they'll have ample
headroom up in that loft.
And I think Chase
was thinking that we could
build up that outer wall
And I think Chase
was thinking that we could
build up that outer wall
where that door was gonna
be a little bit, too.
It's gonna open up
a lot of room in that loft.
Lovely. Figuring it out.
Look out below.
Just like
Thor's hammer.
It's way easier.
Look at
the light!
I heard you guys talking,
how much room can we go up?
- A lot.
- Yeah, I mean,
he was, like, an extra five
feet on top of the roof.
Oh, wow.
- So they'll have quite
a bit of head space in there.
Oh, wow.
- So they'll have quite
a bit of head space in there.
Yeah, and then this loft
can run all the way across
to the kitchen.
It would give you access
into that space.
Head off that peak,
so that those two by fours
there are out of the way.
Then you have access
to more space over there.
Head off down here,
so all this is opened.
That will give
them a lot of space.
- It'll be awesome.
Let's head off out of here.
Sounds good to me.
I think the next steps
are to get in here,
do a little bit more
demo on the interior,
ground's still a little soft,
so we need to make
sure all the frost is out
of the ground
so we need to make
sure all the frost is out
of the ground
so any settling, you know,
happens before we start
levelling it out,
and then it's really a matter
of waiting for good weather,
and start tearing
off the roof.
Let's make like
a tree and leave.
All right, that's
moving everything here.
- Okay.
I'm at, like, 19 now.
It's week three here
at the Wheeler camp.
Uh, the wheel is turning
and we can't slow down.
The back edge
of the camp was about
six inches down in the mud.
So we just find
our high point,
and then we'll bring
the rest of the camp up to it.
Every one of these posts
was sitting on pucks,
but every puck was
sinking into the ground.
Camp's up in the air,
the camp's dry,
Camp's up in the air,
the camp's dry,
but it is soaked
where all these posts sit.
So we're gonna get
new pucks in there,
get some styrofoam,
and keep the camp
from moving.
We'll fill the hole
with crushed stone.
Allows water
to flow underneath it,
and not erode
underneath the pucks.
We used a foam
board for frost,
it allows two inches of play,
for any frost that's gonna
come up through the ground.
This at least allows
the ground to move a little
bit underneath the post
This at least allows
the ground to move a little
bit underneath the post
without the post
actually sinking.
Three quarter.
Perfect.
This way.
So we're sitting tight
on all of them, right?
Boys! Nice job.
It's week four
at the Wheeler camp,
and in the last week,
the guys have removed
the siding
and replaced the old windows.
The next step is to
put up cedar siding
so that the camp
is uniform all around.
Cedar shakes look great,
but they are labor intensive.
So we want to make sure
that we get on those
right away,
so that we stay
on time and budget.
So the guys are cranking
out the Wheeler camp,
they got the roof
stripped off this morning,
and they're getting
prepped and ready
to pull out some
of this framing.
This wall will come out,
this will all get new beams,
a new center beam
supporting everything here,
so this wall
will be opened up,
you'll have a nice room,
looking over the water.
You'll have a nice room,
looking over the water.
The roof pitch
will be increased,
and you'll have
loft space from there,
all the way over to there.
Give the kids
more sleeping area.
- Good luck!
- Nice!
- We can pull this.
- Pretty tight.
Pull that up.
Throughout the Wheeler
camp, it's a big day.
Our friends at Pinnacle
Tree are here,
and that big girl's
coming down.
So there's a lot of excitement
about this tree.
I thought for sure it was
a record-breaker.
We reported it to the state,
but it's a couple
inches short.
It's coming down either way.
It's coming down either way.
You know, we hate
cutting down trees.
And it's sad to see
this one come down,
but it's at the end
of its life,
and it's just gonna
make it much more safe,
and it's gonna protect
their investment.
Ready!
Even though
this is costing a quarter
of the budget,
we're saving money
by not having plumbing
and electrical.
We're using stock
pieces for the dock,
which is gonna bring
the cost of this camp down
and within the budget.
Nice, boys.
Oh, I love it.
It's week five
at the Wheeler camp,
and the guys have
installed new beams
to help support the loft.
The next step is
to put in flooring
and frame up the walls.
The Wheelers have
three growing kids,
so to help with that issue,
we have raised
the height of the loft,
to give them more head space.
We're about midway
through the Wheeler build.
The guys removed
the front door.
We're able
to reuse the windows
and place them back in,
so it matches.
We got our 10 by
20 deck prepped.
We got our 10 by
20 deck prepped.
We got a French door in there.
If you come around
the back, you can see
we're starting to see
the shake to tie
everything together.
As you're coming
into the main house,
you can see extensive
beam work's been done.
We removed this front wall,
built a nice beam system
to carry all the weight
of the two roof
lines coming in.
Some nice four by six hemlock
beams tying in back there.
The back of the camp
got to remain the same.
We still have the nice
big bathroom.
The main bedroom,
and now we have all kinds
of sleeping space upstairs.
Wow.
As you can see, the new loft,
lot more headroom,
As you can see, the new loft,
lot more headroom,
they ripped off the old loft,
added a huge
knee wall up here,
where you get a lot of light
from the back as well,
and a nice view of the front.
Access will come up
here through a ladder.
We'll get
our last roof rafter on,
and we'll sheathe this.
I mean, this is a huge space.
The kids couldn't even barely
stand up here before,
and now look at it.
The goal today is
finish up the rafters,
and start tying things
back together.
We got one gable end
left to frame in,
then we're gonna sheathe
the rest of it.
We got rain coming in,
so we want to get a roof
on this as fast as possible.
So we want to get a roof
on this as fast as possible.
So, it's nice to be able
to have your wall sheathed,
and all your buildings
tied together
before you get up on the roof.
When there's no sheathing,
and the framing's
not completed,
it makes it very unstable.
So, we're gonna sheathe
all the walls,
and then,
we're gonna jump on the roof.
Rapid fire!
Rapid fire!
Yahtzee, baby!
Hold on.
She didn't get wrapped
and shaked.
Nice work, guys!
Where do you
want it, bud?
So, Rodney got
LSBs, so we could furr out
So, Rodney got
LSBs, so we could furr out
existing framing
to new framing.
LSB is better known
as particle board,
and it comes
in four by eight foot sheets.
It'll furr out
where we tie it in
to the existing sheathing,
then we can shake over it all.
How do you like that combo?
Uh...
Oh, here comes...
Look at him.
This guy is like butter,
look at him.
That's years of practice.
Look at him,
going right up to the void.
You'd think
he was snowboarding.
Yahoo.
This looks like a fun project.
I haven't been back in awhile,
so it's cool to see
all the changes.
The massive tree came down,
we've got lots of ideas.
Bill's here with me today.
Hopefully, he can help me out.
Hi!
- Hi.
- Hi.
Hi!
What are you guys up to?
We've got the job
of supervising today.
Chase couldn't make it,
so that's perfect.
- Well!
Hey, hey, good,
I can take his place.
Hey guys,
Bill's the boss today!
-
Yeah, hey,
I'll be watching you close.
When Chase isn't here,
seniority comes into play.
When Chase isn't here,
seniority comes into play.
Bill's definitely got
that covered.
Yeah.
Wow.
Wow, this thing was massive.
Make a nice little
flower garden in there.
I was thinking
that, too.
Yeah, you can clean that out,
put some soil in there.
Yeah, it's gonna be here.
We're not moving it,
so at least we'll do something
to pretty it up.
It's kind of rotted
in the middle,
so it will be easy
to clear it out.
I'm gonna make
a nice little design,
and we can fill it in
with some dirt,
and plant some nice flowers.
We got a little bit
of rain coming in.
We did really well today
to get everything
all framed up.
Loft is all sheathed in,
windows are all done.
Last thing to do is
sheathe this roof,
and beat the rain.
Hey Ash, is that
a two-by-eight
leaning against
Rodney's trailer right there?
This?
Yeah.
Ryan screamed,
and asked if I could come up
and lend a hand.
They needed, just,
somebody in the middle there
to nail down the boards.
They wanted to finish it off
before the rain came,
so I jumped up on there,
and helped them out.
So I jumped up on there,
and helped them out.
We'll just pass the gun
right down the line.
What did I run?
Two, three guys to a drill.
Coming over!
Right there.
Right there, Josh.
Nice, honey!
Yahoo!
And that's up.
Honey, you're kicking butt!
Jedi, you're scaring me.
Out.
I got no more nails.
We're out of nails.
We got rain coming in.
We're so close.
I'm gonna find
enough to finish,
just at least
get the roof sheathed.
Come on, baby.
We gotta manifest it.
We gotta manifest it.
I got no more nails.
We're out of nails.
Halfway through
the Wheeler job,
we got
all the side sheathed...
We got rain coming in.
...we started cranking
on the roof,
and we really wanted
to get it done,
and we ran out of nails.
All right, where are they?
Where are my nails?
Come on, baby.
Now, if I would have said,
"Oh, let's go home early,"
or Ashley was the boss,
said, "Let's go home early,"
we would have had
piles of nails,
but you know how it is.
Oh, baby!
Two sleeves! Two sleeves!
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Yes! Yes! Yes!
That'll get us
the rest of this one board.
One nail. All right.
Can you push down on this one?
I'm out.
Is that it?
Yep.
Done!
They're done.
We got
half the roof up.
We got
half the roof up.
We'll check the forecast.
If that rain's gonna hold off,
I think we'll be all right
'til the morning.
This close.
It's Week 6
at the Wheeler camp.
The rain held off long enough
for the guys
to finish up the roof,
then they were able to install
then they were able to install
the windows
in the loft space...
Nice work
on that framing, boys.
- Thanks.
...and finish up
framing the deck.
The deck will give
the Wheeler family
more space to entertain
friends and family,
and be able to enjoy
that beautiful view.
The next step
is to move inside
and get our walls closed in.
And get our walls closed in.
Week 7 here
at the Wheeler camp.
We've got a lot of pine
and a lot of trim to go.
The majority of the framing,
building's already done,
so now it's time
to close everything in.
Once we're done sheathing
the inside,
Once we're done sheathing
the inside,
we're gonna set up
for the island
and the cabinets
in the new kitchen.
Ashley's picked out
a great solid stain
for this camp,
so it's time to get painting.
The homeowners said
they like green colors,
so we're going
with a nice sage.
Nice cut!
It's Week 9
at the Wheeler camp.
There's just
a few last-minute things
that need to be done.
Chase is working on
the ladder,
Jedi's working on
the kitchen counters,
so I just want to dig
in the old stump
and see if there's enough area
for me to plant
a little flower garden.
How's your gardening going?
Hey.
What are you doing?
I'm painting.
The last man
to get to the job site
The last man
to get to the job site
usually doesn't get to pick
what he does,
and that's me today,
so I'm painting.
I shouldn't have come out here
if I didn't wanna help.
That's how I get you.
I got a deal for you.
If you help me
with this garden,
I'll help paint the floor.
Yeah, I don't know
about working with dead trees.
I only like things
that are grateful and dead.
No kidding.
Well, I'm grateful.
- Want to make a deal?
- Sure.
- Let's make a deal.
- Okay.
Let's make a deal.
Dug everything out
with the help
of my lovely husband...
- Is that good?
- That looks great.
I like the design.
...and then we were able
to plant the flowers in.
This looks good, right?
It can even be a bench. Look.
I like it.
Sit right here,
look at this,
have your flowers
right beside you.
What it's like on a windy day.
What it's like on a windy day.
That wasn't very windy.
- But it is kind of nice.
- Or is it like on a windy day?
It was a great way to preserve
the memory of the tree,
but also, a great way
to just add some beauty
to the old stump,
and to the surrounding area.
It's kind of
the circle of life, you know?
It was a shame
to cut this down,
but we created
something beautiful.
Yeah.
Well, circle around,
now you gotta help me
to paint.
I'm feeling more like
a straight line outta here.
Just kidding. Thank you.
Thank you.
Got it.
This is the main bedroom,
but the good thing about it is
we didn't really need
to do much.
This pink paint is reddish.
Ashley! Honey!
Ashley!
Wife is nowhere to be found
when the painting starts!
She's hiding from me.
Things
are wheeling down
at the Wheeler camp.
We're down to the last week,
and it's looking good.
One of the only things
left was the countertops.
We're gonna piece it together.
We didn't have anything
big enough.
We had long enough,
but not wide enough.
Can I get you
to hold this piece?
Sure.
I'll be cutting
this piece off,
so hold right down
on this whole thing.
Ashley!
Wife is nowhere to be found
when the painting starts!
She's hiding from me.
Let's do this.
Where's my wife?
Lend me a hand.
We're gonna teach
Ashley a lesson.
I decided to help her
with her project,
put my projects on hold.
I was painting away
after lunch,
and she just disappeared,
so I think
I'll play a trick on her.
No good deed goes unpunished.
Okay.
Ryan!
Ryan?
Ryan!
Yes?
Yes?
What is going on
in here?
I died.
I can't finish.
Oh, that's you.
I didn't even notice that.
I was just noticing
the color of the floor.
Why is the floor pink?
I held still
for, like, two minutes.
Chase painted me perfectly,
and all she noticed
was the color.
Go figure.
It's pink.
It's reddish.
Hopefully,
it dries a lot darker
than it looks right now.
Oh, my gosh!
You can never trust
these guys with paint,
ever, ever, ever, ever,
ever, ever, ever, ever, ever.
I'm just gonna finish it off,
and I'm gonna hope,
when it dries,
and I'm gonna hope,
when it dries,
it dries a nice, darker color,
it doesn't look so pink.
The Wheelers had
an awkward set of stairs,
kind of tucked in this corner,
up into
a very small loft space.
Now, they've got
a loft ladder.
I decided to put
the handhold in the center.
There wasn't a lot
of meat here on the sides,
so you go up,
you can grab hold
in the center.
Good access,
and a good sized space
for the kids.
So, our friend Jeff
from Great Northern Docks
is coming up today,
and he's replacing
those old decks.
Jedi and I got
the old dock out of here,
so now they're gonna have
two brand-new decks
that are gonna be connected,
and that can stay in
full-time.
-Jeff, how are we doing?
- Hey, Ryan!
-What's happening?
- Good to see you.
-Good to see you.
- You brought
the army today, huh?
- We're ready.
We're ready to do it.
- Awesome. Awesome.
Yeah, so you're replacing
the two platforms over there,
and the walk sections
in between them.
Yes, and we've got them
the same size
as they were before,
so no issues with code.
Everything's gonna be perfect.
Awesome.
They're gonna be pumped.
Well, I can't wait to see it.
- Oh, it's gonna be awesome.
- Thanks, buddy.
- Oh, it's gonna be awesome.
- Thanks, buddy.
- We'll get going on it.
- We'll see you in a bit.
All right.
I sent Jeff my drawing.
He went in,
found sections
that were premade
they had in stock,
to keep the cost down.
The front platforms
are grandfathered in.
We can't go any bigger,
but if we can use stuff
he has in stock,
we don't have to have
custom platforms made.
It's less money,
it's less labor,
and we can spend
the money inside.
Ooh, look at that.
Look at that!
I forgot my hockey skills.
- Take care
of those skills.
I forgot my hockey skills.
- Take care
of those skills.
Don't point that at me.
This is a big hockey family,
so I'm gonna do
a little decorating
with this hockey stick.
Hey, five hole!
Goal!
Your kitchen's done,
your ladder's done,
your floor's done.
It actually dried up nicely.
It's a nice dark red now.
Camp looks fantastic.
Great Northern Docks
looks killer.
Hey, do you have anything
you want to say?
I say, um,
the team did a great job.
We've reached our goal.
- Um...
- Oh, nice!
Sound the horn,
let's get out of here.
Sound the horn,
let's get out of here.
- Yep!
- All right!
- Goal!
- Goal!
Ashley, call your team.
Over the last few days,
my crew and I have come in,
and we have brought
all of the furniture in.
- Oh, that's it, that's it.
- Right there.
- Oh, that's it, that's it.
- Right there.
Perfect. Awesome.
We were able to check off
a lot of things
on their wish list.
They wanted
a bigger, more open area
to host family and friends,
they wanted
more space for the kids.
We gave them
a larger loft area.
I'm gonna put up
some sort of divider
so that the kids can feel
like they have
their own little bedrooms.
Right?
The family is
a huge hockey family,
so I wanted to just kind of
make something
to just kind of bring
the hockey theme
into the cabin.
I had an old hockey stick
kicking around,
some old hooks,
some old hooks,
and made a nice coatrack.
All right.
So there you go.
Hockey stick coat rack.
There they are.
All right.
Oh, my gosh,
I'm gonna cry!
So, the Wheeler family
had $40,000 and 10 weeks
to get this project completed.
Their big requests were
dealing with the large tree
in front of the camp...
It was definitely
a big project.
Took up a lot of the budget.
...a new deck,
opening the camp up
on the inside,
lightening it up,
also increasing
the size of the loft
for more headroom
for the kids.
Ready to get summer started?
-Yeah.
- Yes.
See the camp?
Oh, my gosh, I can't wait!
-Dad, like, pick it up.
Let's go!
-Dad, like, pick it up.
Let's go!
-Speed this up!
- Oh.
- There they are.
All right.
- I can see the dock!
Look at
the new platform.
Whoa!
- Look at it.
- All right!
- Nice!
- New platforms?
-That is crazy!
- Oh, my gosh!
- It looks so good!
That is
wicked crazy.
Oh, my gosh,
I'm gonna cry!
And the house.
Look at it!
This is insane.
Whoa!
Are we
at the right place?
- Oh, my gosh.
- Oh, my gosh, Mom.
I absolutely love it,
and to see that it looked
like a two-story camp was
and to see that it looked
like a two-story camp was
- a little bit shocking,
and exciting.
- Yep.
Hi, guys!
- Welcome back!
- Hello! Hi!
Let's head on up.
Your new platforms!
How cool, right guys?
- Wow.
- Oh, my goodness!
Decks being level
and actually looking like
they were stable and safe.
Before,
we could only use part of it,
so now
it's full, usable space.
A space where we can enjoy
being down on the water.
So of course,
probably
the first thing you noticed
was your tree's gone.
- Yes.
- Yes.
- Yeah.
- I dug it out, and planted
- Yeah.
- I dug it out, and planted
a pretty little flower garden
in there.
It looks so good now!
We won't miss
raking all the leaves up.
- Oh, yeah.
- Oh, yeah!
Oh, yes.
First thing, that tree
had to come down,
and then we were able
to get going on the camp.
We were able to level out
the camp a little bit more,
got a new deck on the place,
took the old loft off
and bumped it up,
and expanded it
and resided everything
with cedar shakes,
one style of siding
around the entire camp.
Right.
The color is beautiful.
- Yeah, I know.
- I never would have chosen it,
but I love it.
- Yeah, I know.
- I never would have chosen it,
but I love it.
It's a pretty sage.
It's exactly what
I wanted, without knowing.
Yeah, okay, great!
The side deck was always
kind of a dream for us.
I think it's perfect.
I can't wait to go inside.
I know.
I'm nervous.
- I know, let's not keep them
any longer.
- Head right up the stairs,
and head right on in.
- Okay.
Let's go in.
Open it, open it, open it!
- There it is.
Let me see. Um...
-Oh, my!
It looks beautiful!
-Okay.
- Wow.
-Okay.
- Wow.
I love it!
Oh, my gosh, I love it.
-I love it!
You know, before,
it was just,
you had your loft staircase
kind of tucked in the corner,
-there were supports running
every which way...
-Yeah.
- ...so when we took off
the loft roof to bump it up,
we opened up this whole space,
wall of windows right there
looking out over the water.
This light
is just so pretty, isn't it?
This light
is just so pretty, isn't it?
- Yeah, it is,
and the lake...
- It seems brighter here.
-Right.
- It is so much brighter.
We left
the kitchen sink here,
and gave you new cabinets,
new countertops.
Cleaned it up
a little.
- Yes!
- The room looks great.
The refrigerator was moved,
and it allowed
for more countertop space.
They preserved the bar area.
The kitchen is beautiful.
Continue on.
Ooh, yes!
- Oh, there's a hockey stick!
- Wow!
We made you a nice rack.
- With a hockey stick!
- Oh, my gosh!
Oh, my goodness!
Oh, my goodness!
We've been talking
about doing that.
- Yeah!
Well, there you go.
And then, you know,
some dark curtains here.
'Cause you want a man cave.
Yeah.
Uh, I like to sleep in,
so I wanted it
a little darker,
so they did that
with the black shades,
and also adding
the hockey sticks
into the room,
special to me.
I love it.
Ooh!
- It's something.
- My goodness!
- Perfect!
- Wow.
Head on up
to the loft.
Check it out, you guys.
Okay.
Let's see it.
Are you excited, Si?
-Let's see what's up here.
- Stairs that I can
actually use.
Oh, my gosh!
It looks so good!
It's so pretty!
I love it up there.
There's a lot of light
and headspace,
and at our old camp,
I always hit my head,
and I didn't want
to hit my head anymore.
So it's
two separate areas,
all the headspace
that you could need,
so you guys
won't have to worry about
bonking your heads.
Oh, my gosh, I love it.
Oh, my gosh, I love it.
China Lake is
very special to my family,
and we kind of
always just had, like,
the ugly duckling cabin,
where it wasn't always
safe to be here,
and so it's nice that,
you know, I feel like
we can have my family
over here now.
We had $40,000 and 10 weeks
to get the project done.
We were able to raise the roof
for the loft area,
and increase the size of it,
opening up the camp,
letting more light in,
got a deck in there,
level, stable platforms
down by the water.
I just need
to give you the keys,
and it's ready for you
for the summer.
- Great. Thank you.
- Yay!
- Great. Thank you.
- Yay!
- You're welcome.
- Thank you!
Thank you, guys!
I feel like what makes
the camp so special is, like,
all the memories we make here.
Just being on the lake
is so nice.
I want
to say thank you
to the Maine Cabin Masters.
They really
fixed this place up,
and I think we'll enjoy
spending more time here.
We feel
very blessed and thankful
that we've been part of this.
It's more than
we could have dreamed.
We love it.
